My Ren-Faire cherry finally gets popped in Simi Valley, CA.
I know it may be hard for some of you to believe but I’ve never been to a Renaissance Faire before.
I’ve always wanted to go but for some reason it just never happened.
So when I heard about the Nottingham Festival being held in Simi Valley over the next two weekends, I knew it was time.
The festival is an offshoot of the original Renaissance Pleasure Faire which began in 1963 in Agoura , CA.
The Nottingham Festival is said to be a more accessible regional Renaissance style event compared to the much larger Renaissance Pleasure Faire of Southern California, which is now held in the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area in Irwindale, CA. Smaller is generally better in my eyes, so I grabbed my camera and headed to the Valley.
No mead for me, although I heard it was quite tasty.
The festival does a good job at recreating the magic and revelry of an Elizabethan faire and marketplace.
Craft workers and reenactors did their best at bringing a taste of the 16th Century to the Simi Valley Civic Center Park.
Braids for Maids provided patrons with some fancy hair braiding skills.

The great thing about a Renaissance Faire is that everyone loves to have their picture taken. Smile.
This was only the third time that the Nottingham Festival has been held.
Originally started as a 2-day event, it has now expanded into a 4-day event held over two weekends in November.
How you doin?
This lovely lady was playing a cittern that her husband had made her before he died. Sad and sweet, you could tell she was still trying to work through her grief. I think the music helps.

They were kinky in the 16th century.
All weapons were required to be peace-tied.
Peace-tying a weapon keeps if from being used. As an example, a sword must be sheathed and the hilt of the sword must be peace-tied to the sheath so that it cannot be drawn. Arrows in a quiver must be peace-tied together and the bow unstrung. It is a simple process that helps insure the safety of the guests.

He was rather mischievous.
Organizers hope to expand the fair to as many as six weekends…
…which will eventually require the event to move on to a larger location.

Who knew they had emotional support dogs in the 16th century?
