[sh]Artist duo DABSMYLA join forces with Modernica to put their creative stamp on some exclusive furnishings and fully transform a 4,000 square foot Spanish Revival building on the modern furniture manufacturer’s property in Vernon, CA.
Past the toy warehouses and industrial buildings in Vernon…
…I encountered a colorfully painted building that wasn’t like the others. Nope, this was DABSMYLA presents “Before and Further“, a 4,000 square foot installation of a stand-alone Spanish Revival building.
They’ve fully transformed its interior and exterior with their newest paintings, sculptures, installations and exclusive furnishings…
…including hand painted ceramics and custom-built lighting installations, all designed and created exclusively for their collaboration with Modernica.
The furniture company that specializes in mid–20th century modern-inspired pieces, originally approached the duo to collaborate on a line of chairs.
The two artists met while attending art school. Eventually, their friendship led to a date and their first joint painting.
The two-story building stands on its own within a larger a five-acre campus built in 1927 to house a steelworks company.
The building had been used for many things over the years including a porn studio. Oh my!
Before and Furtheris inspired by the individual life experiences of DABSMYLA – experiences that ultimately resulted in bringing the two artists together and explores their mystical union and shared balance of love, creativity, friendship and sexuality.
The couple painted everything themselves, working every day for eight straight weeks.
Their detailed work can be found throughout the space…
…from painted walls and doors…
…detailed maps painted on stairway posts…
…and graphic Case Study planters. Almost everything within the space is for sale. MUSHROOM BOWLS ON WOOD STAND $395.
FIBERGLASS SIDE SHELL W/ DOWEL- CAT HEAD PINK $395.
FIBERGLASS SIDE SHELL W/ DOWEL BARSTOOL- MUSHROOM $490
There’s fun hidden surprises all around if you know where to look…
…like this magic mushroom dancing on top of a telephone pole in the parking lot.
There’s also an off-limits area upstairs next to the giant cat head…
…which can only be viewed by looking through the hidden peepholes along the wall.
Paintings hang inside that Dabs Myla created at their home studio and at Modernica HQ.
Before and Furtherrecalls the artists unseen journey of experience, the shared creative energy they’ve embraced and their cosmic consciousness of togetherness.
The installation exemplifies DABSMYLA’s adventures in modern living and artistic partnership with a bit of psychedelic experimentation.

The outside of the building definitely stands out in Vernon’s mostly industrial landscape.
